NPEA Intern - 2010-11 Academic year

The Steppingstone Foundation is seeking an intern to assist with an exciting initiative: the National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA).

Organizational Overview: Founded in 1990, The Steppingstone Foundation develops and implements programs which provide motivated students with educational opportunities that lead to college success. Steppingstone runs two programs in Boston: The Steppingstone Academy, which prepares underrepresented students for admission and success at selective, independent and public exam schools, and the National Partnership for Educational Access. Steppingstone has affiliate programs in Philadelphia and Hartford. Steppingstone recently completed a strategic plan, which includes a new program called the College Success Academy, to be launched in 2011.

NPEA Overview: Launched in late 2007, NPEA is a membership association for programs committed to increasing educational opportunities for motivated underserved students across the United States. Member organizations provide underrepresented students with academic preparation, placement services and counseling, and ongoing support to ensure enrollment at and graduation from four-year colleges. Above all, member organizations share a commitment to educational access and opportunity, and believe that high-quality education is a right and not a privilege.

Intern Responsibilities:
Member Services, Outreach and Research
Assist Director with activities that will grow and expand NPEA services. Activities include:
o Member recruitment, outreach, and communication
o Sharing of best practices with members
o Research in field of educational access (e.g. relevant articles, topics to share with members)
o Database management and data entry
o Data collection related to member programs
o Planning and implementation of college tours for NPEA members in Boston area
o Planning and implementation of local NPEA meet-ups for members

Conference Planning
Assist Director with national conference planning. NPEA will hold a second annual conference in April 2011. Activities include:
o Preparation of materials
o Member outreach
o Conference planning logistics
o Participation on planning calls (note taking, communication with participants)
o Speaker outreach

Details:
This is an unpaid part-time internship/field placement position from September-May (can also be semester to semester). The ideal intern is responsible; detail oriented, computer savvy, and has strong written and verbal skills. Interest in nonprofits, project management, education, and educational equity is important.
