The SMASH Program

SMASH stands for Saturday Mentoring And Study Hall. It is a program offered through the Support Services department at Steppingstone to all Scholars who have completed the 14-month component of the Academy. Sixth through 12th graders who wish to attend may spend two hours every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., working on their homework with the help of an adult. Volunteers may participate at two different levels of commitment:
1. Study Hall Specialists commit to attending SMASH at least once per month and they make themselves available to any Scholar needing help in specific subjects. Please note: We are not currently recruiting Study Hall Specialists for the 2007-08 academic year. We will recruit new Specialists starting over the summer for 2008-09.
2. Academic Mentors commit to attending SMASH at least twice per month, and they work with the same one or two Scholars throughout the school year. Mentors also check in with their Scholars once per week via phone or email. We ARE still recruiting Academic Mentors for 2007-08.

If you are interested in becoming a SMASH volunteer, please fill out and complete the Volunteer interest form or you may contact Jenny Foster directly at 617-423-6300 x254.

SMASH is currently held at Boston Latin Academy, 205 Townsend Street, in Dorchester. Parking is available, and it is a short bus ride from Ruggles, Jackson Square, Dudley, Fields Corner, and Roxbury Crossing T stations. The SMASH sessions during the school year are on Saturdays, September through May.

Events

The success of Steppingstone programs is inseparably linked to the results of our fundraising efforts. Benefit events alone raise nearly 30% of our annual revenue, and their success is due in large part to the efforts of our volunteers.

An Event Volunteer’s specific responsibility depends on the nature of the event. Throughout the year Steppingstone events include a golf tournament, a black tie auction and dance, and a live auction and dinner hosted by the Board of Directors. Event volunteers can be involved in two ways: as committee members or as day-of-event staff. Committees primarily focus on generating attendance. When an auction is included, committee members also help obtain donated items. Day-of-event volunteers help with registration, set-up, clean-up, running games, sellling raffle tickets, and handling other event activities.

To sign up to be part of our event committees or to sign up to be a day-of-event volunteer, please complete the Volunteer interest form or you may contact Jessica Lockwood directly at 617-423-6300 x237.

Alumni Advisors

Once Scholars have graduated from high school and entered college or the work force, they may elect to meet one-on-one with Alumni Mentors who have offered to look over resumes, discuss specific fields and career paths, help with graduate school applications, find scholarships, etc. For more information, contact Jessica Lockwood at 617-423-6300 x237.
