Program Assistant, College Success Academy

Program Overview

The College Success Academy, launched in 2011, is an academic program of The Steppingstone Foundation designed to help increase the number of Boston Public School students who graduate from college. Through additional classroom time in critical subjects like math, science and English language arts, the program prepares underserved students in grades 5-8, to be successful in high school, with the goal of graduating from college.

Position Overview

The Program Assistant of the College Success Academy will work on a small team to support the successful execution of this program. This multi-faceted role blends supporting the academic and social emotional needs of enrolled middle school students, with recruiting and admitting prospective students to the program. Successful candidates will possess an educational program skill set that includes classroom teaching and student management, problem solving, administrative and technological skills, as well as attention to detail. There are currently 100 Scholars enrolled in grades five through eight, who attend three BPS schools in Brighton/Allston and one in East Boston. Saturday and evening work required.


  • Serve as the day-to-day point of contact and Advisor for enrolled students and their families
  • Support the development and execution of program climate/culture, reflected in preventative structures and socio-emotional curriculum, community and family events, and behavior management systems
  • Teach in the summer and afterschool sessions as needed
  • Collaborate with the program team to support and implement all program components
  • With the assistance of program leadership, use effective systems to track and analyze program progress and results, including a database and data-tracking tools
  • Build program knowledge and understanding through internal trainings, collaborative projects, connecting with different departments and external constituents
  • Collaborate on cross-departmental events.


Strong candidates for this position will demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • Experience working with a diverse group of elementary/middle school students and ability to support and challenge students as appropriate, incorporating cross-cultural sensitivity and high expectations
  • Teaching experience in a classroom or out-of-school time setting
  • Experience as an effective team member in a collegial environment
  • Strong relationship-building and group facilitation skills across differing stakeholders, including Boston Public Schools and Steppingstone
  • Effective project management skills with demonstrated flexibility and problem-solving capabilities
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of a growing program
  • Strong attention to detail and process management
  • Demonstrated commitment to educational equity and college access
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Bi-lingual Spanish speaker strongly preferred
