A Day in the Life

What’s it like to be a Scholar in the College Success Academy?
A typical summer day might go like this…

7:30 a.m: Meet Steppingstone classmates at the bus stop.

7:35 – 8:00 a.m: Ride the bus to the summer campus.

8:00 – 8:20 a.m: Eat breakfast with friends.

8:20 – 8:45 a.m: Community Time – See who won Teacher of the Week and watch the Teaching Assistants perform a funny and informative skit about the best way to ask for homework help.

8:45 – 10:20 a.m: Math Class – Mr. Wexler teaches the class how to multiply fractions. Everyone plays some math card games, and then uses laptops to practice other math skills on the Khan Academy website. Homework: practice multiplying fractions by converting measurements in Mr. Wexler’s favorite cookie recipes.

10:20 – 10:35 a.m: Snack Time – Eat a snack and chat with friends in the classroom.

10:35 a.m – 12:15 p.m: English Class – Read a chapter of Tales from the Odyssey and discuss the differences between humans and Greek gods. Work on writing individual myths, and then collaborate with a partner to edit each other’s writing. Homework: draw a Venn diagram comparing Odysseus and Zeus.

12:15 – 12:45 p.m: Lunch – Get to play outside after eating lunch!

12:45 – 1:00 p.m: DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time– Read my favorite Rick Riordan book.

1:00 – 1:50 p.m: aPlay with Ms. Horwitz – The class plays “noodle hockey,” which is like field hockey, except with a beach ball and foam pool noodles!

1:50 – 2:40 p.m: Science Class – Mr. Manna teaches the class about different kinds of energy and instructs us to build roller coasters to test theories. Homework: begin a lab report describing the roller coaster experiment.

2:40 – 3:00 p.m: Break – Play soccer on the field and catch up with friends.

3:00 – 3:35 p.m: Study Hall – Work on homework, and ask Mr. Wexler for help on a tricky math problem. Advisors also check in to see whether everyone had a good day.

3:35 – 3:45 p.m: Dismissal to buses.

Note: This schedule reflects a College Success Academy day during the six-week summer term. During the school year, Scholars meet after school for about 2.5 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
