“She’s a good tutor. She makes learning fun!” – Kimora Mitchell, 5th grade Scholar

LaKeisha reflects on her experience tutoring Scholars:

My favorite part of tutoring for the College Success Academy is helping Scholars with their homework. I like being helpful, so I definitely enjoy when they ask me for homework help. I like the students – they’re fun and sassy. Each day, I look forward to their energy. A child’s energy is so uplifting, it really brightens my day.

I decided to tutor because I think it’s important to be present, to offer my help, and to know that I did the best I could to support each Scholar. During my time with the College Success Academy, I have learned that all kids are different. I expected students to generally be receptive to the same things, but that is not the case. I have definitely come to understand that you cannot do the same thing with every Scholar. Every strategy has to change to fit the needs of the student.

It’s important to teach children at a young age to aspire to go to college, to persist, and to earn their degrees. Getting through college is not an easy task and is quite the achievement. There’s value in the College Success Academy because the Scholars come first here. They’re still young adults learning about themselves and how to navigate their own academic and personal lives. They are confronted daily with adolescent, academic, and social challenges, and Steppingstone acknowledges this by catering to the whole student. That’s why I say choose CSA!
