Saturday Mentoring and Study Hall

Offered every Saturday throughout the academic year, SMASH is a two-hour study hall where Scholars can work independently, collaborate with other students, and receive one-on-one tutoring. Volunteers support Scholars by serving as tutors and mentors, and these meaningful relationships help students gain confidence, build their academic skills, and stay on track for college.

When and Where:

  • Saturday mornings
  • 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Located at Boston Latin Academy in Dorchester

Volunteer Positions:

“There is no feeling more rewarding than being part of a Scholar’s journey through this once-in-a- lifetime opportunity. Working with them through obstacles and reveling in their successes makes me feel privileged to be part of the Steppingstone family.”

– Kate Darling
Steppingstone Teacher

STUDY HALL SPECIALIST

Committing to at least one Saturday per month, Study Hall Specialists make themselves available to help different Scholars each week at SMASH. They may tutor in whichever subjects they are comfortable.

ACADEMIC MENTORS

Academic Mentors are paired with an individual Scholar for the semester or school year, and their mission is to help that student stay focused academically. They commit to a weekly phone call or email with the Scholar and to attending at least two Saturday SMASH sessions per month. Mentors do not have to tutor in every subject, but they help inform staff of the Scholar’s particular academic needs and progress.
